Collaborators Valentín-Martínez and Gonzalez first met under the auspices of the Humanities Without Walls consortium to investigate Native American/African American/Latino presence in the Global Midwest. Working with a think tank of artists curated by Holly Hughes we developed sketch ideas for a movement work that explored the landscape of the lakes, the African American resort community of Idlewild, the labor of harvesting wild rice, and the sounds and feel of Mexican ranchero music.
