The Living Lakes considers the Great Lakes as connectors and sites of conflict and dissonance among multi-ethnic communities. This project dramatizes histories of ethnic populations in the Chicago area and engages communities in dialogue and discussion about stories rooted in communities of color.

Anita Gonzalez (a professor of global theatre here at Michigan) and Joel Valentin-Martinez (a professor of dance from Northwestern University) are co-directing this project. In addition to that they have a composer and media designer from the United Kingdom.

Special thanks to the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and to Holly Hughes.

The project began in 2015 as a Mellon funded Humanities Without Walls grant for The Global Midwest.

The project is slated for a first workshop performance at High Concept Laboratories in Chicago in Fall 2017 with Cynthia Bond’s “Performing Home” series
